I've tried several fad diets and have two diet focused blogs and they often work short term but don't last if you don't use them as a springboard to healthier eating and living.
Counting calories really helps me because it makes me accountable to myself. I use online calorie counter at fitday.com to help me (it's free).
I also firmly believe in the cheat day to keep yourself from feeling deprived.
