What would lead a person to do this?

The following is taken from a news article in my local paper

"Bahvna Parekh remembers the man who checked in to her motel last Friday (Feb. 5).

He was a gentleman, the Knights Inn Hotel owner recalled.

He paid by credit card and spent a quiet night by himself.

There was no indication the man was only hours away from stabbing his ex-girlfriend in a frenzy before taking his own life by leaping off the Peterson Creek Bridge.

Kamloops Mounties were called to the Columbia Street hotel at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 6) and arrived to find a Kamloops woman nearly dead.

Police would later learn her severe injuries came from the hands of her ex-boyfriend.

Parekh said her son opened the door and found the woman on the ground, covered in blood.

Mounties launched a search for the suspect, but it ended when the man committed suicide by jumping from the Peterson Creek Bridge on Highway 1.

His body was found the next morning in the park below.

Kamloops RCMP Const. Bernie Ward described the attack as “sadistic” and the scene as “horrific,” noting the man clearly left his ex-girlfriend for dead."

I knew the man who did this very well and need answers or ideas on what would lead him to do this? This is a man who I know for a fact was never phsically abusive to a man or woman in his life then out of the blue decided to stab his girlfriend 25 times before jumping off a bridge. He suffered from depresion most of his life but towards the end it was almost like he had a split personality. The weeks leading up to his suicide he smashed up his car and most of his posessions in a violent rage. Even inflicting injuries to himself but never to others. He also became very distant to his friends. Any help would be appiciated.
