Default Need to Help my Aunt

My dear aunt has had a terrible bout with diabetes over the last few years. I want very much to help her in any way I can and I think that part of that help may come in the form of finding recipes that will be safe for her and give her some exciting food choices that will be healthy. Anyone have a favorite recipe to share that would be diabetic-friendly?

That sounds wonderful, thank you! I have a letter sealed and ready to mail to her but I think I'll open it back up and print out a few recipes for her.

I hope you'll be able to find lots of good recipes that your family will enjoy. You may be surprised to learn that it's not just sugar that needs to be monitored, but things like carbs, too, if I'm not mistaken. It's a whole diet issue, I believe.

Watch out for carbs for sure. Starches and sauces are now a big no no for me. I thought bagels were good for you. Then you find out they breakdown into more sugar than a doughnut.

Ah, yes... this is all just part of a huge volume of information that needs to be learned. I wouldn't have known this about a bagel before starting to study these issues, and I'm sure many others won't know in the beginning either.

Just in case you hadn't considered this, have you checked out the diabetic food shelves at supermarkets or specialty stores?

I've actually spent more time looking for the Atkins low carb products than diabetic foods, but I found some things that were quite good.

katharina, in addition to what Taggart said, go to the Customer Service desk in the supermarket too and ask if they have a list of diabetic friendly products. Most of them offer this as a free service but few take advantage of it. A lot carry information for gluten free ones too for anyone that needs to avoid that.

You also have to remember that you can try to help but your aunt is the only one that can change her habits. i know how it feels to try to help and the effort be destroyed by a mere " I don't want help" There is nothing else you can do for them but hope and love them!!

I have a friend who is diabetic and also has a learning disability. She had several very serious bouts of illness and could not get her blood sugar under control. We found that a company in our region creates frozen meals especially for a diabetic diet and these can be ordered online weekly. In her case it made life so much easier for her. Others who are better able to cook may still find it helpful to have these meals a couple of times per week.

justontime, I have a friend who uses those frozen meals for diabetics, I think they are a good idea especially for those who have trouble cooking. I was surprised how nice they are.
